Wastewater Treatment and Water Conservation Policy

SIUC recognize that responsible wastewater management is essential to our sustainability mission and institutional accountability. In alignment with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, SIUC has implemented clear processes to ensure that all wastewater generated across our campus is safely and lawfully managed.

SIUC also adheres to rigorous internal monitoring procedures. Our team regularly inspects drainage, plumbing, and sanitation systems to minimize risk, improve infrastructure performance, and ensure environmental compliance. All relevant data is reviewed and documented as part of our ongoing sustainability audit.

In addition to safe wastewater discharge, SIUC supports water efficiency practices by reusing greywater where feasible and promoting the installation of low-flow and water-saving fixtures across campus. These efforts help reduce overall wastewater volume and contribute to circular water use.

Beyond compliance, SIUC is proactively working to save water and reduce wastage across all levels of the institution. This commitment is driven by both environmental responsibility and the recognition that water is a finite and increasingly valuable resource. Our approach includes:

Installation of water-saving devices such as low-flow taps, dual-flush toilets, and water-efficient fixtures in restrooms and public areas
Reuse of greywater for non-potable purposes such as toilet flushing, general cleaning, and landscape maintenance where applicable
Awareness campaigns and orientation sessions to educate students and staff about daily water-saving habits and institutional practices
Routine monitoring of water systems to detect leaks, inefficiencies, or excess usage, with immediate rectification procedures in place
Monthly water usage tracking to measure consumption and set internal conservation targets

SIUC’s long-term vision is to build a campus culture where every member of the university community plays a part in water conservation, from daily actions to institutional planning. We recognize that saving water is not just a cost-saving measure, but a vital contribution to climate resilience, ecosystem protection, and national sustainability goals.
