SIUC Leads Student Voluntary Scheme to Empower Communities in Kampung Pukak

Selangor 12 June 2023 – Spectrum International University College (SIUC), in collaboration with Jesselton University College (JUC), organized a student-led voluntary community engagement workshop in Kampung Pukak, Kiulu. This initiative aimed to empower the elderly with digital skills, promote environmental awareness, and foster meaningful intergenerational connections between students and the local Dusun community. With 52 participants, including students, faculty, and local elders, the workshop became a platform for learning, cultural exchange, and personal growth.

As part of the scheme, students introduced the elderly to online platforms where they could share their crafts with a wider audience, creating opportunities for income and digital engagement. Mental health awareness sessions, led by JUC Psychology students, highlighted the connection between mental health and environmental well-being, encouraging open dialogue and reducing stigma, particularly among older participants.

The workshop also featured hands-on sewing and craft-making activities, where participants, guided by local elders, created traditional garments and decorative items. These sessions preserved Dusun heritage while fostering teamwork and knowledge-sharing across generations. The meaningful interactions between students and elders enriched both groups, promoting mutual support and lifelong learning.

This student voluntary scheme exemplifies SIUC’s commitment to community service, inclusivity, and personal development, bridging generations while addressing relevant social issues. It also reinforces SIUC’s dedication to creating sustainable, positive change through education and collaboration.
