Advancing SDG Education through Cultural and Community Engagement

Spectrum International University College (SIUC) hosted the Merdeka Fiesta 2025 under the theme “Rentak Retro, Irama Klasik”, held over two days at the SIUC campus in Subang Jaya. While designed to commemorate Malaysia’s Independence Day, the event served a broader educational purpose by promoting cultural identity, national unity, and social inclusion key elements of Sustainable Development Goal 4.7 (Education for Sustainable Development) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities).

The Fiesta was open to the public, welcoming students, staff, lecturers, alumni, and local community members, including urban youth from underserved areas invited through SIUC’s outreach partnerships. Alumni actively participated as event facilitators and judges, fostering intergenerational dialogue and reinforcing the university’s role in lifelong learning. Local residents from campus nearby were also invited as guests, joining cultural appreciation activities such as the “Best Sarong Contest”, Retro Explorace, and a Malaysian film screening (“Ops Helang”) that sparked reflection on national identity and civic responsibility.

Although informal in format, the event was designed to embody the principles of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) by embedding learning through culture, civic participation, and heritage preservation. It promoted values of inclusivity, patriotism, and cultural resilience while creating a sense of belonging for all participants regardless of background. By engaging diverse community groups in educational and inclusive celebrations, the event encouraged reflection on cultural sustainability, shared national values, and identity-based cohesion, aligning directly with Malaysia’s national SDG commitments and UNESCO’s ESD framework.

The Merdeka Fiesta 2025 was publicly promoted via SIUC’s social media platforms, posters, and community invitations, ensuring transparency and community access. This outreach initiative underscores SIUC’s commitment to extending the impact of SDG-related education beyond formal classrooms and into the broader community
